Christmas Considerations

19771225 Christmas Considerations - Rev. Tommy Jones

Are you busy right now?  Well, here is a short one for us.  As we get ready for Christmas, Brother Tommy asks us to stop and consider a few things about the human birth of our Savior.  Did God have to send His Son as a helpless infant?  In fact, weren’t most people looking for a warrior riding in with an army to lay waste to the wicked?  How much more can we relate to Jesus and vice versa because He went through everything we go through on a daily basis?  What does Jesus Christ’s birth and life have to do with His death?  What does Christ’s birth and death have to do with ours?

What Grade Will You Make?

19820919 What Grade Will You Make - Rev. Tommy Jones

Around here it is crunch time.  Its test time, the end of the grading period.  So along with all the excitement of the Christmas season upon us, our students also must devote time to studying.  Maybe you are glad that you don’t have to study anymore.  But is that really the case?  Even after I left school, I used to have a nightmare about walking into a final for a class I forgot to attend.  What if that is a warning not to neglect the lessons of the greatest teacher ever?  Are we listening? Really listening?  How about looking?  What does loving have to do with learning?  Are these three things enough?  What more is necessary for us to learn?  Identification and participation.

Try Thanksgiving

Most people were raised to say ‘thank you’ when they are given something positive.  They may not always do it.  But what does the Bible say about how people who have invited Christ into their life should react?  We are called to be thankful for the good and the bad.  The bad?  Why are we told to be thankful in bad times?  How does that work when times are tight, or when we are sick or suffering?  What is the right way to give thanks to God?  Wait, there is a wrong way?  And how do horrible deaths and disasters happen if everything happens according to God’s will?  How does giving thanks benefit the thankful person?

The Message Of Mountains

19810628 The Message Of Mountains - Rev. Tommy Jones

Do you have the privilege of living in or near the mountains?  Maybe you have visited a majestic mountain range.  What message did Brother Tommy bring back from his visit to the mountains?  What can they teach us about perspective?  Hint:  I live in the Appalachian mountains of North America but, when I compare them to the Rocky Mountains on the same continent or the Andes in South America or even the Alps in Europe I see that my mountains are not that big (but they are still impressive.)  Where should we focus?  Creation or Creator?  What can we learn about stability?  How about security?  If God preserves His people like the mountain folk do with their food, what kind of fruit does that make us?  But seriously, what kind of mishaps and calamities has He kept from us?  And that preservation is not just for the here and now.  Hallelujah!

Perfect Peace

Today in America, we are celebrating our veterans for the sacrifices they have made attempting to bring peace to our country and our world.  But even when we agree a war has ended, another conflict arises somewhere or even flares back up in the same place.  How and when will we achieve a perfect peace?  The same way we can achieve a personal peace.  Is it by trusting in ourselves, self confidence?  Or would it be better to put our trust in the creator of all things, the great ‘I Am’?  The Bible says that while we are in a sinful state, we are at war with God.  And yet against all the cumulative military knowledge of this world, He sent his Son to die for His enemies (us).  Like any hard fought battle it takes action from both sides to end the skirmish.  Are you still fighting God?

Must Jesus Bear The Cross Alone?

Have you ever known somebody that walked around with a piece of jewelry around their neck that celebrated a device of execution?  I am not talking about Halloween or Day of the Dead celebrations.  In this message Brother Tommy reminds us of the original use of the crucifix.  Could anyone else have helped with or even accomplished what Jesus did on the cross?  Literally, no.  Christ was the only one who could die on the cross for our sins and He was the only one who could defeat death through the Resurrection.  Ah, but figuratively what does the Bible say about taking up our own cross?

Why do we have to face storms in life?  Storms of emotion, drama, and tragedy come into all of our lives.  When we trust God and hand him control of our life, do the storms stop coming?  It could get worse?  What kind of incentive is that?  What can trials teach us?  If storms are coming, no matter what, how can we prepare?

Information comes at us from every direction these days.  If you haven’t heard it or read it somewhere you can google it.  But how do we find what God wants us to know?  Well, as we discussed last week we have an authoritative source, the Bible.  And in it, God tells us through Paul three things we need to know.  How does the biblical meaning of Hope differ from the way we use that word today?  To what does God look forward?  What is His inheritance?  Where is the power in the Christian life?
