Tongue Talk – My Grumble Tone

19851124 Tongue Talk - My Grumble Tone - Rev. Tommy Jones

Okay one more topic on guarding the tongue.  Sure #grumpycat is funny and the grumpy old man or woman is a #comedy stereotype, but what happens when you become the #joke?  How does a grateful mood affect your attitude and your life?  What is covetousness and how does this destroy happiness?  How is that different from jealousy?  How does unbelief cause grumbling?  So these are the causes, but what are the consequences of grumbling?  Is there a cure?

Tongue Talk – The Man Who Swears

19851110 Tongue Talk - The Man Who Swears - Rev. Tommy Jones

#Swearing, #cursing, #profanity – should they be a part of a believer’s speech?  If swearing proves that a person has no fear of the Lord and the Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, what does that tell us about the person who swears?  Why do court systems have people swear on the Bible?  When is that ok to do?  Have you ever sworn something fantastic, exaggerated, or just downright wrong?  How prolific has the use of GD and OMG become in public and in the media?  Which one made it easier to use in public without others recoiling from the lack of decency?  I don’t know, but I think it is literally being used by the Devil to desensitize as many as possible and to lessen the greatness of God at least in human opinion.  What is the irony of the people who use the Lord’s name the most in casual conversation?

Tongue Talk – Before You Spread The Word

I

What is wrong with a bit of juicy #gossip?  How fast and how accurately do these stories typically travel?  It is no wonder our courts do not allow hearsay testimony.  Just look at the telephone game where a group of people sit in a line and a message is whispered by the first person, who then whispers it to the second, and so on until the last person repeats the message out loud to the group.  Invariably, the more people there are in the line, the more the message changes through misunderstanding, biases, interpretation, or sometimes just mischievousness.  How serious does God take the telling of tales?  How much would your communication be curtailed if you were to ask the Lord before you repeated something you heard?  Even a new follower or a person seeking to follow Christ can filter their speech if they just apply three simple criteria.  This message was delivered in 1985, before the dawn of social media, but it is even more relevant today. Tongue Talk – Boasting Is Tricky Business

19850924 Tongue Talk - Boasting Is Tricky Business - Rev. Tommy Jones

Whether you #humblebrag or just #showoff, be aware the Lord will deal with the proud.  But, is boasting ever ok?  Would it surprise you to learn that God himself boasts?  It feels pretty good when your boss brags on you. Just imagine how it would feel to have the God of the Universe to be proud of you.  So what are good things about which to brag?   And on the flip side, what are the bad or forbidden topics?  How can you avoid sinful boasting?  Watch what you are bragging about and which direction you are pointing when you do it.

Tongue Talk – Sense in Nonsense

19850915 Tongue Talk - Sense In Nonsense - Rev. Tommy Jones

Before you think our guest speaker is #DarthVader, just know these old tapes drag sometimes.  #Wit, or #humor, is a wonderful #tool we possess to make our speech more interesting and memorable.  Does the Bible encourage us to use jokes?  I can just imagine God laughing on his throne as the proponents of evolution struggle to figure out the platypus.  What can be warded off using laughter?  But , wasn’t Jesus always serious?  In contrast, what kind of humor is prevalent today?  How can we keep a good thing like humor from getting twisted into something wrong?

Tongue Talk – A Life Without Lies

19850908 Tongue Talk - A Life Without Lies - Rev. Tommy Jones

How often do you tell a #lie?  What do surveys tell us about the frequency of #lying?  What does the Bible say about our tendency to be dishonest?  How does God feel about lies?  How are Christians called to be unusual in regards to lying?  Is there more than one kind of lie?  What does flattery have to do with lying?  What is the worst lie we can tell and why is it the most futile?  How refreshing is it to deal with an honest person?

Tongue Talk – The Kickative Mood

19850901 Tongue Talk - The Kickative Mood - Rev. Tommy Jones

It’s been a while since I gave you a Brother Tommy #series.  How about a series on the most #powerful #muscle in the human body, the #tongue.  This week, we will start off with what is wrong with using the tongue to tear others down.  When if ever, is judgment necessary?  Is there such a thing as talking too much?  Are we ever to judge others?  What makes us think that bringing others down, lifts us up?  What did Jesus have to say about it?  How can we avoid it?

Sinners Only Welcome Here

19860209pm Sinners Only Welcome Here - Rev. Tommy Jones

We just celebrated the death and resurrection of #JesusChrist.  Did He make that #sacrifice for ‘good’ people?  What is the fallacy in thinking ‘I am better than those church people’?  What was Jesus’ response when He was criticized for associating with sinners?  Why did the Lord compare the unsaved to lost sheep?  How are we like a lost coin when we refuse to have a relationship with Jesus?  And if you are a parent, I am sure you can relate to the lost son analogy.  What do these three parables teach us about the triune identity of God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?
